In Impressions of Home, Charmaine tries to capture home, not just as the four walls of your family house, but as a feeling of belonging and community.
Charmaine comes from a dual-heritage background, with both English and Pakistani family, and she cites this as essential to her work. Throughout her life, she has lived across the country, from Staffordshire to London, Oxford and Liverpool.
In each place she has had to make her feeling of home in new surroundings, while feeling pulled back into an idealised vision of her Pakistani heritage, or her nostalgic English countryside upbringing.
Through paintings of places like Morocco, Turkey, India, Pakistan, and the UK, Charmaine connects us beyond language and culture. Experience her art's intimate moments and dream-like places at our gallery this summer.
